City of Kennewick: 9/11 Memorial at the Southridge Complex – Remembrance Ceremony 10:30-11:00am9/8/2021 With the upcoming 20th anniversary of September 11, 2001, we wanted to remind our community of the 9-11 memorial located at the Southridge Sports & Events Complex in Kennewick. We encourage our citizens to come and visit the memorial to remember the events of September 11 and those who sacrificed their lives and continue to do so for our safety, security, and freedom.
There will be a formal ceremony in remembrance of September 11, 2001 held at the memorial from 10:30-11:00am on Saturday, September 11. Congressman Dan Newhouse will be the keynote speaker. 9/11 Memorial Background - The City of Kennewick was one of only a few communities throughout the entire United States that received a piece of steel from the World Trade Center and we are extremely proud to have this memorial in Kennewick. It is an important symbol to gather at on this solemn day and it stands proudly throughout the year to greet those who enter our southern gateway. For many it has also become a destination point and we continue to receive numerous compliments and comments expressing appreciation that this memorial is accessible to our residents and visitors. Lampson International worked in conjunction with the City of Kennewick and the Port Authorities of New York and New Jersey to facilitate the monument's transfer and fabrication. The memorial quickly grew in to a community-wide volunteer project that had numerous local businesses and residents working in partnership and donating generously. The three-ton, 35-foot-tall monument was dedicated on September 11, 2011. Trios Health recently published its community benefit report for the 2020 calendar year. The annual report showcases the broad scope of the hospital’s contributions to the Tri-Cities community and illustrates the many ways the organization contributes to the physical and economic health of the communities it serves – an investment which became even more essential in a historic year.
“Our mission of Making Communities Healthier has always been central to the integral role we play in the Tri-Cities,” says John Solheim, chief executive officer (CEO) of Trios Health. “But as the COVID-19 pandemic began to impact our region, our mission became even more critical. As part of LifePoint Health – a national healthcare network that provided quality care for more than 20,000 COVID-19 patients in 2020, including those in our own communities – Trios Health was able to continue our legacy of quality care and community leadership, protect and enhance the health of our neighbors and continue creating places where people – like you – choose to come for care. We achieved this despite the challenges of the past year thanks to the hard work and commitment of our wonderful team of providers, employees and volunteers, and the support of those we serve.” Trios Health’s 2020 community benefit report showcases its continued focus on meeting the region’s evolving healthcare needs through welcoming new providers, adding and expanding service lines and continually investing in its facilities and care technology. In 2020 alone, Trios Health added 72 employed, affiliated, telehealth and temporary providers in cardiology, critical care, emergency medicine, neurology, obstetrics and gynecology, radiology, urgent care, urology and more; and made more than $3.3 million in capital improvements, including expanded endoscopy capabilities and new urology and interventional pain medicine services. Additionally, a donation of nearly $13 million in health services to those in need demonstrates the hospital’s ongoing commitment to ensuring access to care for everyone, regardless of their ability to pay. Trios Health is also dedicated to creating places where physicians want to practice and employees want to work. In 2020, the hospital distributed more than $87 million in salaries, wages and benefits for its approximately 950 employees, and provided more than $160,000 in professional development and tuition assistance to help its staff grow professionally and expand their expertise and experience to continue finding newer and better ways to care for patients. This year’s annual report also highlights how Trios Health’s role as a leader in the communities it serves extends far beyond the physical walls of its facilities in tangible and meaningful ways. Last year, the organization paid $14,553,262 in local and state taxes, demonstrating its dedication to fiscal responsibility, being a good community partner and supporting the economic health of the Tri-Cities. Additionally, the hospital is proud to be able to continue to support local activities and organizations in myriad ways, including United Way of Benton & Franklin Counties, United Way Festival of Trees, Chaplaincy Healthcare, Family Expo, Senior Times Expo, and Southridge Sports Complex. “We are grateful to call the Tri-Cities home and are proud to contribute to its economic and physical well-being in all the ways that we do,” said Solheim. “We are also incredibly thankful for and encouraged by the support our communities have shown us over the course of this historic year. As we look to the future, we are inspired to further enhance how we serve our neighbors today and in the bright days and years ahead.” Trios Health’s complete 2020 community benefit report is available here. The Blue Mountain Council, Boy Scouts of America, will honor local Kennewick Police Chief Ken Hohenberg with the prestigious North Star Award at a virtual Scouting leadership event on September 28, 2021.
Scouting’s North Star Award recognizes community leaders for their outstanding achievements and support for youth and families in their communities. Ken Hohenberg, a 43-year veteran of the Kennewick Police Department, has served the Tri-Cities community through a myriad of programs throughout the years some of which include the Rotary Club of Columbia Center, United Way of Benton and Franklin Counties, DARE Executive Law Enforcement Advisory Board, and Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs to name just a few. He’s also received numerous recognitions including Kennewick Man of the Year in 2005 and Tri-Citian of the Year in 2009. In 2010 he was also recognized as the National DEA/DARE Executive of the Year for his leadership in drug education and enforcement. Legendary NFL Quarterback and Patriots Hall of Famer, Drew Bledsoe will provide the keynote address at the event. His discussion about leadership ties in with Scouting’s critical mission of continuing to build tomorrow’s leaders and keeping the Scouting program strong in our community. This Scouting reveille was initially planned to be an in-person breakfast but is now going to be an online event. Gesa, a community-chartered credit union, just announced they have partnered with Food Lifeline and Second Harvest in honor of Hunger Action Month. For the entire month of September, the three organizations are working together to raise awareness about food insecurity and mobilize the public to take action on the issue of hunger in the Northwest.
Food Lifeline is a non-profit organization that provides food to more than 300 food banks, shelters, and meal programs across Western Washington, which equates to providing 134,000 meals every day. “We are grateful for our partnership with Gesa Credit Union. Hunger Action Month is a time to stand against hunger by sharing, volunteering and supporting the work we are doing together,” said Ryan Scott, Chief Development Officer at Food Lifeline. “We are proud of our shared commitment to building communities where everyone has access to nutritious, culturally relevant foods.” Similarly, Second Harvest is a non-profit organization that provides 280 food pantries and meal sites to more than 55,000 people each week in Eastern Washington and North Idaho. “Our friends at Gesa walk the walk,” said Jason Clark, President and CEO of Second Harvest. “Whether helping us distribute food to veterans or sorting fresh produce, Gesa’s sponsorship of Hunger Action Month is just one highlight of a year-round commitment to support the communities where the credit union operates.” Gesa is the presenting sponsor for both organizations and will donate $25,000 to each organization for a total of $50,000 in monetary contributions. Gesa will also host food drives at each of their branch locations and offer team members safe, socially distant volunteer opportunities that follow the Washington State Governor’s guidance for all pandemic related policies. “Gesa is proud to support Food Lifeline and Second Harvest in their campaigns to raise awareness about hunger and to safely mobilize the public to take action on an issue that impacts communities across the state,” said Angie Brotherton, Assistant Vice President of Community Relations for Gesa Credit Union. “We’re happy to take part in the incredible work that both Food Lifeline and Second Harvest do, and we are grateful that our team’s efforts can help make a difference in the lives of many individuals across the state who are experiencing food insecurity. For more information about Food Lifeline, visit their website https://foodlifeline.org/. To learn more about Second Harvest, visit https://2-harvest.org/. For more information about Gesa Credit Union’s involvement in the community, visit https://www.gesa.com/community. Gesa Credit Union is sponsoring Second Harvest’s Hunger Action Month® (HAM) again this year, not only with dollars but also volunteers at the food bank’s Pasco and Spokane warehouses.
“Our friends at Gesa walk the walk,” said Jason Clark, President and CEO of Second Harvest. In addition to a generous contribution of $25,000, Gesa employees are helping to sort and pack food for their neighbors who are in need of food. “Whether helping us distribute food to veterans or sorting fresh produce, Gesa’s sponsorship of Hunger Action Month is just one highlight of a year-round commitment to support the communities where the credit union operates.” “Gesa is proud to support Second Harvest in their campaign to raise awareness about hunger and to safely mobilize the public to take action on the devastating issue of hunger,” said Angie Brotherton, Assistant Vice President of Community Relations for Gesa Credit Union. “We’re happy to take part in the incredible work that Second Harvest does, and we are grateful that our team’s efforts can help make a difference in the lives of many individuals in eastern Washington and north Idaho who are experiencing food insecurity.” Gesa Credit Union has committed to match September donations up to $25,000, and Gesa employees will lend a helping hand by volunteering for Second Harvest in both Pasco and Spokane. (Media are welcome to film at these times and locations. The guidance of the Washington State Governor for all pandemic related policies will be followed.)
This year’s $25,000 donation adds to the $150,000 Gesa granted Second Harvest’s hunger relief work over the previous decade. “The long-standing support of Gesa and its employees is truly an inspiration for us,” Clark added. Hunger Action Month is a time when people all over America stand against hunger and is led by Feeding America. Second Harvest is one of 200 Feeding America member food banks from across the country. Sharing, volunteering, pledging to advocate, fundraising and donating are just a few ideas for taking action this month. The annual Tri-Cities Wine Festival, a Pacific Northwest event for more than 40 years, has been permanently discontinued, according to Ted Davis, president, Tri-Cities Wine Society, which hosted the event for more than 30 of its 40-year run. Davis made the announcement recently at the society’s annual membership meeting. The festival has annually attracted more than 1,000 attendees, including wineries and their representatives from Washington, Idaho, Oregon and Montana, and years ago, also from British Columbia. What would have been the 42nd festival had to be cancelled in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions on large gatherings.
“Closing this chapter of the wine society’s history was a difficult decision for its board of directors,” Davis explained, “but we do so with a sense of pride and feelings of accomplish-ment as we reflect on the growth of the Northwest wine industry over the past 40-plus years and the part the festival has played by showcasing Northwest wineries and their wines. The Tri-Cities Wine Society is looking forward to continuing to do so with other events.” In reflecting on the wine industry, Davis shared that early in the festival’s history, it was the only way many attendees could sample Northwest wines as there were few tasting rooms or wine events. Much has changed over the years. The festival was the longest, continuously judged wine festival in the Northwest. It was started in 1979 by Coke Roth, a Tri-Cities attorney and past president, Tri-Cities Visitor and Convention Bureau – now Visit Tri-Cities – and his friend, Maury Balcom, as a fundraiser for a copier for the bureau, and as a way to promote Northwest wines and the Tri-Cities as a tourist destina-tion . After 10 years and wanting to move in a different direction, the bureau offered the Tri-Cities Wine Society the opportunity to host the event. While the festival has been in different locations and at different times of the year, for many years it was a November event at the Pasco Red Lion, and then, for more than 10 years, at the Three Rivers Convention Center and in partnership with VenuWorks. “I want to take this opportunity to thank all the wineries and businesses that have supported the festival, including our silent auction, over its long history,” Davis went on to say. “For several years, proceeds from the auction have been targeted for scholarships to students focusing on viticulture and enology in area schools,” Davis added. “I also want to extend a sincere thank you to the hundreds of volunteers over the years who worked to ensure the festival’s success,” Davis added. Regarding the volunteers, he said, “As the wine industry grew, so did the festival. It became a year-round effort for a small core of volunteers to ensure its success.” Lourdes Health is pleased to announce that Lourdes Health Crisis Services has moved to Lourdes Counseling Center, located at 1175 Carondelet Drive in Richland.

Visit Tri-Cities, in partnership with TBEX Events, announced TBEX North America is postponed until April 18-21, 2022, due to concerns surrounding the COVID-19 delta variant.
“Though we are disappointed that this event is being postponed until spring of 2022, the health and safety of TBEX attendees, sponsors and residents of the Tri-Cities is paramount,” said Michael Novakovich, President & CEO of Visit Tri-Cities. TBEX North America will still be held at the Three Rivers Convention Center in Kennewick for the rescheduled dates, and sponsors are committed to support the event in 2022. Many of the planned activities, including Pre-Bex tours of local attractions and receptions at popular points of interest, will continue to be a part of the TBEX program. “We look forward to hosting TBEX and the hundreds of expected travel content creators for an amazing experience that only the Tri-Cities can offer,” Novakovich said. “Spring is a beautiful time of year in our community with arguably some of our best weather. In fact, we now can highlight even more of the Tri-Cities tourism assets and attractions, and we will be able to do so safely. The media coverage from TBEX will amplify our efforts in economic recovery by creating additional interest and future visitation to our destination.” TBEX North America is the largest conference and networking event for influential travel content creators from throughout North America and beyond. TBEX is expected to attract approximately 350-400 travel bloggers, online journalists, content creators and industry professionals with an online reach of more than 300 million. The conference program features three days of educational and networking opportunities as well as familiarization tours throughout the Tri-Cities highlighting the region’s exciting and unique attractions, from STEM activities and outdoor recreation to wineries and farm-to-table. The Tri-Cities can look forward to immediate and exponential exposure as attendees share their Tri-Cities experience via social channels. To learn more about TBEX, visit https://tbexcon.com/. |
